How To Write Resume

The first impression of your career is your CV, bio-data, or resume.

What is a resume?

It is a document in which the job seeker mention the following points:

  1. Personal details like full name, contact no, address, and e-mail ID.
  2. Educational details that includes you school and college details.
  3. It also includes your experience, awards, and skills.

Freshers will make resume and experience person will make CV which is called Curriculum Vitae (CV). Whether you are applying online for any company for job, in college placements, or in a job opening, everywhere you require is a resume or CV.

Most of the companies decide whether to call this candidate for interview or not based on your CV or resume. Creating resume or CV is not a difficult task. All people do it and they keep on updating it.

How To Write Resume

While creating a resume, you need to follow these steps:

01. Within 20-25 seconds they should understand:

Recruiters must understand your CV or resume in 20-25 seconds what all things you have done at your college. The time limit is 6 seconds, make sure that a manager can easily screen your CV in 6 seconds.

02. Select the proper format:

Through your resume or CV, you want to create impact on the person reading your resume or CV. In this case, the format is very important. The different types of formats of resume or CV are:

a. Chronological format: Here you mention study and experience in order.

b. Reverse chronology format: Here the details of your experience and education are mentioned in reverse order. The latest education and experience will come first and older educational and experience details are provided later.

Current experience:

2021:_____________

Previous experience:

2020:_____________

2019:_____________

2018:_____________

This type of format is used by experienced professional.

c. Functional format:

Here in this format the person will focus on his skills:

  • JavaScript, HTML, Python
  • IDEs: Visual Studio, Android Studio
  • Excel, MS Office
  • AWS, GCP

This kind of format is used by freshers and after 3-4 years of experience you can combine the above formats and create a CV out of it.

d. Video resume or CV:

Here in this format, you record a video to show your skills and experience. You must add graphics and text to it. The duration of the video must be 60 seconds. You can use free video editing tools that are available online for making a video resume. When you are sending mail of hardcopy of your resume or CV also send your video.

03. Formatting rules to follow

After deciding what all things you will add to your resume or CVs like skills and experience. Now it’s time to decide how the resume or CV must look, for this, you need to follow some steps.

Make sure that you keep everything on one page because the recruiter will not go for the next page. Avoid creating a long resume or CV. Make sure that your font size is not too small and don’t make it too small to fit things on one page, keep font size proper so that it will look nice. Avoid using long sentences because the recruiter may see your resume or CV on a tablet or mobile. Keep font size to 12. Make sure that your resume is friendly means it should open on all devices.

After setting these things, now focus on spacing between words, bold or underlined headings, highlight achievements with bullet points, mention your social media profile like LinkedIn because sometimes a recruiter wants to see your profile.

04. Resume categories

It must have personal details, career summary, experience summary, educational details, skills, and abilities.

05. Add your promotions

If you are fresher then it is not applicable for you. If you are an experienced person then add the promotion details of your previous company this will attract the recruiter. For example, how you become a senior engineer from a junior engineer and in how much time.

Mistakes To Avoid

Try to avoid grammar and spelling mistakes. Avoid too many graphics and colors in your CV or resume because the recruiter may think that you are doing more to impress him/her. Use different CV or resume for different companies and edit based on company requirement. Make sure you don’t lie in your resume, add all skills you know not the skills you don’t know. Avoid mentioning the skills and hobbies that are not related to the company job profile. Do not forward the same mail to every company, try to send them separately.

Tips For A Good Resume

  1. Keep your CV or resume simple.
  2. Keep it simple.
  3. Highlight your achievements.
  4. Don’t lie in your resume.
