The use of Brushless DC Motors is extensively increasing for various applications due to their compact and robust structures. Compared to Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors; the BLDC motors have higher power/weight and higher torque/current ratio. A BLDC motor requires an inverter and position sensors to perform the commutation process as the motor does not have a commutator and brushes.

However, the position sensors present many disadvantages like an increase in machine size, reduction in reliability, and higher noise. Thus, many researchers have suggested the application of sensorless drive which can regulate speed and position without using shaft-mounted position sensors. The main types of sensorless control methods are the back-EMF measurement, third harmonic sensing of back EMF, back EMF integration, flux linkage estimation, freewheeling diode, and estimator-based approach.
