In the CAN protocol, a node which wins the CAN bus transmits the data completely. In the FlexRay protocol, a node has to complete transmission within the given time slot, else the frame is dropped completely and has to be retransmitted. This task is performed by the communication controller. In CAN protocol, the bus arbitration is evident. In FlexRay protocol, there is no bus-arbitration. It works on TDMA basis. FlexRay is not used for safety critical applications.
