The advantages of IPMSM over SPMSM are:

  1. The issue of bonding the magnets to the rotor for the SPM is eliminated by embedding the magnet into the rotor. This enables the rotor to spin at higher speeds.
  2. The concern of very high voltages at high speeds is mitigated by reducing the span of the magnet and the resulting magnet torque while compensating fort this reduction with reluctance torque. This can also increase the overall torque density of the machine.
