An exciter is a system which is used to produce flux by energizing the field winding by the passage of current. There are 3 types of excitation: AC , DC and static excitation. The amount of excitation required depends on the load current, load power factor and speed. More excitation is required when the load current is high, power factor lags, and speed is low.
