In the case of a hybrid vehicle.
 
In this case, the coupler adds the torques of the ICE and EM together and delivers the total torque to the driven wheels. The ICE and EM torque can be independently controlled. The speeds of the ICE, EM, and the vehicle are linked together with a fixed relationship and cannot be independently controlled because of the power conservation constraint.
