Cygwin is a distribution of several GNU and other Open-Source tools running on Microsoft Windows. Cygwin provides a similar functionality as Linux distributions except on Windows. Cygwin is dll (cygwin1.dll) which acts as Linux API layer providing Linux API functionality. Cygwin contains thousands of packages from the Open-Source world. Cygwin is supported on all modern released versions of Windows – Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10, Windows Server 2008 and all later versions of Windows, except Windows S mode. Even though it is not possible to run Linux native apps on Windows directly, but it is certainly possible to rebuild those apps and run on Windows.
