Top 10 Power Plants In India, Power Plants That Generates High Energy

Hello guys, welcome back to my blog. In this article, I will discuss the top 10 power plants in India, power plants that generates high energy, we have created this list based on generation station capacity, etc.

Let’s discuss the top 10 thermal power plants in India. Wait…… what? Thermal power plants?……. yes, because in terms of capacity in India, the largest amount of electricity is generated by thermal power plants which are 68.07% of total energy consumed in India.

85% of thermal power plants generate power using coal. In India, all top 10 power plants are coal-fired based, and five of them operated and owned by National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC). Here, we go ahead towards all top 10 Indian power plants in descending order.

10. NTPC Dadri – 2642MW

Location of the NTPC Dadri in Gautam Budh Nagar District, Uttar-Pradesh with the nameplate capacity of 2642MW. The plant has a total of 12 units 6 of them coal-based and another 6 are gas-based plants of 1820MW and 817MW respectively with the addition of a 5MW solar plant. The operator of the plant is NTPC and the commission date is 1991.

09. Chandrapur Super Thermal Power Station – 2920MW

Location of Chandrapur super thermal power station in Chandrapur, Maharashtra with a nameplate capacity of 3340MW. But when new 2 units are installed in 2016 old 2 units were retired. Now the original capacity of the plant is 2920MW. The total available unit in the plant is 7, units 3-4 have 210MW, and units 5-9 have 500MW each. The power station is owned by Maharashtra State power generation company.

08. Sipat Super Thermal Power Station – 2980MW

Location of Sipat super thermal power station in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh with the nameplate capacity of 2980MW. The plant has a total of 5 coal base units (3 of them is generated 660MW and another 2 generate 500MW). The owner and operator of the plant are NTPC.

07. Rihand Thermal Power Station – 3000MW

Location of Rihand thermal power station in Renukut sonbhadra district, Uttar Pradesh with the nameplate capacity of 3000MW. The power station has 6 coal base units ( all of them have 500MW capacity each). The owner of the plant is NTPC and the commission date is 1988.

06. Talcher Super Thermal Power Station – 3000MW

Location of Talcher super thermal power station in Angul district, Utter-Odisha with the nameplate capacity of 3000MW. This plant is also known as NTPC talcher kaniha. The power station has 6 coal base units (all of them have 500MW capacity each). The owner of the plant is NTPC and the commission date is Feb-1995.

05. Trioda THERMAL POWER STATION – 3300MW

Location of Tiroda thermal power station in Tiroda, gondia district, Maharastra with a nameplate capacity of 3300MW. This power station has 5 coal base units each of them have 660MW capacity. The plant is operated by Adani power. All units are commissioning in the range of sept-2012 to oct-2014.

04. Sasan Ultra Mega Power Plant – 3960MW

Location of Sasan ultra mega power plant in Sasan village singrauli, Madhya Pradesh with the nameplate capacity of 3960MW. This plant is also known as Sasan UMPP. The power station has 6 coal-based units (660MW each). The owner of the plant is reliance power limited. The commission date is March 2015.

03. Mundra Ultra Mega Power Project – 4000MW

Location of Mundra Ultra Mega Power Project in Mundra, Kutch District, Gujarat with a nameplate capacity of 4000MW. It is the third-largest power plant in India. The plant has 5 coal-based units with supercritical boiler technology (800MW each). The plant owned by the Tata power group. The commission date is 2012 to 2013.

02. Mundra Thermal Power Station – 4620MW

Location of Mundra Thermal Power Station in Mundra, Kutch district, Gujarat with the nameplate capacity of 4620MW. The plant has a total of 9 coal-based units (4 of them have 330MW each & another 5 have 660MW each). The owner and operator of the plant is Adani power. The date of commissioning of all units is May 2009 to March 2012.

01. Vindhyachal Thermal Power Station – 4760MW

Location of Vindhyachal Thermal Power Station in Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh with the nameplate capacity of 4760MW. This is the largest capacity of a power plant in India. The plant has a total of 13 coal-based units (6 of them have 210 MW each & 7 of them 500MW each). The plant owned by NTPC. The commission date of the plant is 1987.
