10. Generation of Photovoltaic Solar Power with Maximum Power Plant Tracking

This system minimizes the number of panels that are required to generate electric power. That reduces the photovoltaic array system cost. By fixing the solar array in one place, we can’t generate maximum power because the sun is not constant in one place. This system locates the position which generates maximum power.

This can be done by the MPPT controller. It includes a quadratic equation-based algorithm that calculates the quadratic function which corresponds to a maximum power point. The cost of this project will be around 1500 to 2000 rupees for the prototype.

09. Electronic Soft Start for a 3-Phase Induction Motor

The main purpose of this project is to limit the starting current of a 3-phase induction motor by providing a smooth start. There are several methods to start the induction motor but these are costly so this method of controlling the induction motor provides an efficient starting control. It includes 6 silicon-controlled rectifiers that are connected across the 3-phase induction motor.

Here some set of lamps will be used to represent the coils of a 3-phase induction motor. The control unit will send triggering signals to the thyristor at the starting of the motor. The cost of this project will be around 10,000 to 20,000.

08. Minimizing Penalty by Engaging APFC Unit for Industries

The purpose of this project is to improve the power factor by using a set of capacitors that are connected in parallel with the inductive load. Because of lagging load in the industries power factor will reduce and it results in bearing penalties imposed by the electric utility companies. So it improves the power factor by switching the capacitors based on the power factor value. The circuit is designed with zero voltage switching and zero current switching sub-circuits.

Then the obtained zero positions of voltage and current of these circuits are used to calculate the time difference between them and also power factor will be calculated. Depending upon the calculated value of the power factor capacitors will be connected across the load. Just to make a small prototype the cost will be around 500 to 1000 rupees.

07. GSM Based Substation Monitoring and Controlling System

The aim of this project is to acquire various substation parameters like voltage, current, temperature, power factor, and many more remotely through GSM communication. The remote operator is able to analyze the parameter values and takes corresponding control action. A user can operate substation equipment like isolators, circuit breakers, relays, by remotes. Here we can make use of a microcontroller that accepts the input parameters. (current and voltage etc.) and controls the output correspondingly.

The user sends the input parameters periodically to remote GSM mobile through the GSM networks. This allows the control signals to control the substation equipment. The cost of this project will be around 3000 to 5000 rupees.

06. Android Based Electrical Appliance Control

This project is an advanced method of controlling home appliances from a conventional manual switch pressing system. It uses a mobile with a user graphical interface application in it. The control circuit can be attached to the number of devices that have to be controlled through a relay mechanism with a Bluetooth communication module. This Android mobile has to be paired with the receiver-side Bluetooth modem.

So that user will send signals to the appliance to control it. At the receiver, the side microcontroller will manage all actuators for various loads that depend on the control signals from the user. The cost for making a prototype will be around 700 to 1000 rupees.

05. ZigBee Based Solar Power Forest Fire Detection and Control System

The idea of this project is to detect and prevent forest fires by using ZigBee Communication. The entire transmitters are good, will be located in the forest with different types of sensors like smoke detectors or fire detectors, which are powered with a solar panel system. The embedded circuitry which will be present in the transmitter circuit collects the data and processes it.

Then it will send data to a remote PC through the ZigBee communication module. On the receiver side, a ZigBee transceiver-based PC will be placed that receives the signal sent by the transmitter circuit gives alert to fire engines and also actuates the fire protection equipment in the forest remotely. Just for the prototype, the cost will be around 800 rupees.

04. PLC and SCADA Based Traffic Control System

This smart control system uses programmable logic controllers(PLCs), and SCADA HMI to monitor and control the traffic signals. This system will be useful in high-traffic density areas and tollgates. This will be a centralized control of a traffic system that is, it collects several places traffic conditions remotely with the help of a communication medium.

This information will be monitored using SCADA HMI. Also, depending on the traffic density at different junctions, it will control the traffic light through the remote operation. Just for the prototype, the cost will be around 1500 to 2000 rupees.

03. Automatic Room Light Controller using IR Sensors

This project will include a mechanism with which room lights switch on when the person enters the room and lights will be switched off when a person exits the room automatically. In addition to this, it also displays how many numbers of persons are entering or leaving the room by means of LCD. By this operation, power can be saved. In this system total of 2 sets of IR LED and IR sensors will be connected to the microcontroller. It detects the entering or leaving of the person.

A microcontroller is programmed in such a way that, it receives the signals that are entering from the IR sensors ant it turns the bulb automatically and also it increments the counter. Similarly, for the existing sensor, it turns off the bulb when a person leaves the room and it decrements the count. This will be displayed on the display. The cost of the project will be around 1000 rupees.

02. Home Automation System With Arduino

A home automation system is an automatic controlling of any type of electrical or electronic appliance by sitting at any corner of the world. This system is centralized control of HVAC and appliances like fan, fridge, tv, etc. This system uses the Arduino development board along with the attached Bluetooth communication for remote control.

A graphical user interface allows us to send on/off commands to the receiver end( where the appliances are connected) from the transmitter end. The Arduino operates the appliances with the help of optoisolators by receiving commands from the user’s cell. Just for the prototype, the cost will be around 2000 to 3000 rupees.

01. Closed-Loop Control Brushless DC Motor

The intention of this project is to make mechanical loads to run desired speeds by designing a closed-loop system. It uses a feedback system just to compare the actual speed with the desired speed. The user has to enter the desired speed from a matrix keypad, then the control circuit will receive this information and compares the actual speed that is sensed by the speed sensors.

Then it sends PWM signals to the motor correspondingly. The cost of this project will be around 3000 to 6000 rupees.

These are the top 10 projects for diploma and engineering students. I hope this article “Projects For Diploma And Engineering Students” may help you all a lot. Thank you for reading.
