Underground Transmission Lines

The transmission lines are mostly of overhead transmission type but rarely the underground transmission is used. The underground transmission can be done under the ground or any other marines or sea subways. The underground transmission is the most expensive transmission which uses cables for transmission and it is also used for only lesser distances compared to the overhead transmission lines. The underground longest transmission lines are still under construction and some are under working conditions. The underground transmission lines are mostly used in the marines and sea subways. Let us see the top underground longest transmission lines in the world:

12. MOYLE INTERCONNECTOR – IRELAND

The Moyle interconnector is the 500MW power-rated HVDC link that runs between Scotland and Ireland. The distance of this power transmission cable is 64KM and it is a submarine-type cable. This cable transmits the DC voltage of 250KV. This Moyle Interconnector came into operation in the year 2001.

11. HVDC CROSS CHANNEL- FRANCE

The HVDC cross channel is also called the Interconnexion France Angleterre (IFA). This runs beneath the English channel between continental Europe and the British Electricity grids. There are two cables which run as the interconnectors from France to England. The power rating of the cable is 2000MW which is a submarine cable and covers a distance of 73KM by transmitting the AC voltage of 400KV and DC voltage of 270KV. This submarine cable was commissioned in the year of 1986.

10. HVDC KINGSNORTH- UNITED KINGDOM

HVDC Kingsnorth is one of the oldest submarine cables which connects Kingsnorth and England. This line has a unique feature that from the Kingsnorth Substation it runs +266KV as a positive pole for distance 59 KM and then fromthat point the negative pole starts running with voltage of -266KV for distance of 26KM. The total length of the transmission line is 85KM. The power rating of the submarine cable is 640MW. This system came into operation in the year 1974 and it is closed in the year 1986 due to some internal fault and destruction factors.

09. ISLE OF MAN TO ENGLAND INTERCONNECTOR- UNITED KINGDOM

The Isle of Man to England Interconnector is one of the oldest underground transmission lines which consists of a submarine power cable that connects Bispham, Blackpool, England, and the Douglas Head, Isle of Man in England. The main concept of this underground transmission line is to connect the Manx Electricity authority with Great Britain. The length of the submarine power cable is 104KM. The power rating of the cable is 40MW and it transmits the AC voltage of 90KV. This Underground transmission line came into operation in the year 2000.

08. CAITHNESS- MORAY TRANSMISSION LINK-SCOTLAND

The Caithness-Moray link is the high voltage dc submarine cable that runs between the Spittal Substation, Caithness, and Blackhillock Substation, Moray in Scotland. The power rating of the submarine cable is 1200MW and it transmits the DC voltage of 320KV. The length of the transmission line passing through underground of Moray is 160KM.

07. NEMO LINK – BELGIUM

The Nemo Link is the High voltage submarine power cable that runs between the Richborough Energy Park, United Kingdom, and Zeebrugge, Belgium. The power rating of the cable is 1000MW and it transmits a voltage of 400KV. The length of the submarine cable is 140KM. This transmission line came into operation in the year 2019.

06. IFA-2 INTERCONNECTION – FRANCE

The IFA-2 is the interconnector that runs between France and the United Kingdom under the sea. The cable power rating is 1000MW and the voltage rating of the cable is 320KV. The length of the cable is 204KM. This cable came into operation in the year2021.

05. BRITNED – NETHERLANDS

The Britned is the 1000MW high voltage dc line that runs between the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. The Britned is the Submarine cable which is of length 260KM. The transmission voltage capacity of the britned is 400KV. This Britned came into operation in the year 2011.

04. EAST-WEST INTERCONNECTOR – REPUBLIC OF IRELAND

The East-West Interconnector is the high voltage dc line which is of rating 500MW and runs between the United kingdom and the republic of Ireland. This transmission line transmits the 400KV AC line and 200KV DC line. The total length of the transmission line is 263KM. This is also a Submarine cable that came into operation in 2012.

03. WESTERN HVDC LINK- UNITED KINGDOM

The western HVDC link is the undersea electrical link that runs between western Scotland and Northern England. The transmission capacity of the undersea electrical link is 2250MW. The total length of the transmission line is 422KM and it transmits a voltage of 600KV. This transmission line came into operation in the year 2019.

02. NORTH SEA LINK – NORWAY

The Northern sea link is the high voltage direct current transmission line that runs between the Norway and United Kingdom. The power rating of this transmission line is 1400MW which transmits a voltage of 515KV. The length of the transmission line is 720KM. The cable used is the submarine cable which is transmitted through the sea. This cable came into operation in 2021.

01. VIKING LINK- DENMARK

The Viking Link is the longest underground transmission line in the world which runs between the United Kingdom and Denmark. The length of the transmission line is 740KM. The power rating of the underground transmission line is 1400MW and the voltage transmitted through this is 400KV Ac and 525 KV Dc. The Underground transmission lines use cables for power transmission with high-level insulations.

The above are the top 12 underground transmission lines and we can also expect so many underground lines in the future as it provides efficient operation and it covers all the equipment and components from the civilized world.
