Voltage divider formula,

A voltage divider is a viral circuit in the electronics field. The goal of the voltage divider is to convert the higher voltage level into the lower voltage and the voltage divider circuit uses a pair of resistors i.e., R1 & R2. The circuit of the voltage divider is shown below.

circuit of voltage divider
circuit of the voltage divider

In the above circuit,

  • Vs is known as the source voltage and is measured in volts
  • R1 is the resistance of the first resistor and is measured in ohms
  • R2 is the resistance of the second resistor and is measured in ohms
  • Vout / V is the output voltage and is measured in volts

Working of the voltage divider

The voltage divider is mainly used for reducing the source voltage. Two resistors are connected in series to drop some amount of voltage. By using just two resistors we can reduce the voltage and the complexity of designing it is very minor. As you can see from the above formula, the voltage divider takes three inputs such as Vs, R1, and R2 and it gives one output i.e., Vout.

If R1 and R2 values are equal, the output voltage will be half of the input voltage. If R2 is greater than R1, the output voltage will be near the input voltage. If R2 is lesser than R1, the output voltage will be very low because the drop across resistance will be less.

Applications

  • It can be used for level shifting
  • It can be used as a potentiometer
  • Used in labs for experiments
  • In resistive sensors
