DC Motor Or Generator

The construction of the DC motor is the same as that of the DC generator. The DC motor is a machine that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy whereas the DC generator converts mechanical energy into electrical.

Parts Of Motor Or Generator

The basic parts are:

  • 01. Yoke
  • 02. Pole Core
  • 03. Pole Shoe
  • 04. Field Winding
  • 05. Armature Core
  • 06. Armature Winding
  • 07. Commutator
  • 08. Brushes

09. Bearings

Now I will explain all the parts in detail.

yoke in dc motor

01. Yoke- It is the outermost part of the DC machine, it protects the materials which are used inside the machine. It also gives mechanical support to the poles. The yoke is a part of a magnetic circuit that provides a low reluctance path to the magnetic flux. The material used for the construction of yoke is cast iron because it is cheap and for high machines, silicon steel is used because it provides high permeability that is low reluctance and gives good mechanical strength.

02. Pole Core- The core is fixed to the yoke. The function of the pole core is to carry field windings which are necessary to produce flux. The material used for the construction of the pole core is cast iron or cast steel.

03. Pole Shoe- The function of pole shoe is to distribute flux uniformly and to provide a low reluctance path to the flux. The material used for the construction of pole shoe is cast iron.

04. Field Windings- The field winding is wound on the pole core and the function of it is to carry current due to which pole core, on which field winding is placed behaves like an electromagnet, producing necessary flux. The material used for winding is aluminum or copper as they are good conducting material.

05. Armature Core- The armature core is in a cylindrical shape which is mounted on a shaft and it consists of slots on its periphery and the air ducts are used to permit the airflow through armature which serves a cooling purpose. The function of the armature is to provide housing for armature winding and to provide a low reluctance path to the flux which is produced by field windings.

06. Armature Winding- The function of armature winding is to generate emf in case of generators whereas in the case of motors it is used to carry the current supplied.  The armature winding must be made up of conducting materials like copper or aluminum.

07. Commutator- To convert energy from AC to DC or DC to AC we use inverter or converter circuit. The commutator is also called as mechanical rectifier which converts AC to DC in case of a generator whereas in the case of a motor it converts DC to AC. The commutator is also made up of copper segment as it collects currents and the insulation used to separate segments is mica.

08. Brushes- The function of brushes is to collect current from the commutator in case of a generator or to give supply to the commutator in case of the motor. The brushes are stationary elements which are placed over the commutator. The material used in brushes is carbon because it has a high melting point, it is smooth, it easily takes the shape of the commutator surface.

09. Bearings- For low duty machines ball bearings are used as they are more reliable and for heavy-duty machines, roller bearings are used.
