Smart Energy Meter
01. The present energy meter which we were using is of electromechanical type and somewhere people are using digital energy meters.
02. The electromechanical type of energy meter consumes more time and it is also inaccurate.
03. Nowadays accuracy in energy meter is very important, the smart energy meter is more accurate which gives real power consumption and accurate billing. SEM is less time consuming and cost-effective.
Introduction
The energy meter is a device that is used to measure the energy consumed by the utilizer. Usually, sometimes the energy meter will be fixed to a restricted area which is difficult to calculate the bill, the best solution is a smart energy meter that sends SMS to the phone such as how much energy is consumed, how much units are consumed, etc. The SEM consists of RTC which is the heart of the smart energy meter, all operations are done by a real-time clock. The GSM based SEM by using a micro-controller is also the best project for electrical students.
The IC AD7751 is used to measure real power The IC in meter uses a current transformer to measure current which is proportional to the load, then the real power is converted into the frequency and the frequency is given to the micro-controller. The smart energy meter is also linked with the bank account of the owner so that the amount can be directly deducted and the owner receives two messages one of money deducted and another one message of the bill. Everything is based on GSM.
We can also implement IoT or Internet of Things by which the EM will be connected with the internet and we can also see real time graph of energy consumption.
Parameters measured by the device
- Units of the month
- Bill of the month
- Real power
- Load on line
Feature of smart energy meter
- Highly accurate
- Real-time operation, we can see graph of energy consumption.
- Fully automatic means amount will be paid automatically.
- Live billing display in mobile.
- Get bill in one missed call
Advantages
- High accuracy – The information is accurate with no errors.
- Low cost – The cost of device is also less.
- Reliable – No complexity in operation.
Disadvantages
- The system fails if there is no network because without a network the device can’t send SMS.
- Requires fixed GSM number.
