AC And DC Transmission Systems
What is the AC transmission system?
The transmission lines which carry alternating current from the generating station to a substation are known as the AC transmission system. In India, the AC transmission system is more used.
What is the DC transmission system?
The transmission lines which carry direct current is called DC transmission system. In India, the dc transmission system is very rarely used. Now I will discuss the difference between alternating and direct current transmission systems.
AC And DC Transmission Systems
The basis of comparison is
- 01. Number of conductors
- 02. Inductance
- 03. Voltage drop
- 04. Skin effect
- 05. Need for insulation
- 06. Interference
- 07. Corona loss
- 08. Cost
- 09. Repairing and Maintenance
- 10. Transformer
- 11. Rectifiers and Inverters
01. Number Of Conductors – In the AC transmission system, three conductors are required for three phases ( R, Y, B) whereas in the case of the DC transmission system only two conductors are required for negative and positive wires.
02. Inductance – Inductance is present in the case of the AC transmission system because it carries alternating current due to alternating current changing flux will be set up, this changing flux links with conductor due to this flux linkage inductance is produced whereas in case of DC transmission system inductance is not present.
03. Voltage Drop – In the AC transmission system voltage drop is more whereas in the DC transmission system voltage drop is less due to the absence of inductance.
04. Skin Effect – The skin effect means the current starts flowing on the surface of the conductor. In the AC transmission system, the skin effect is present due to the uniform distribution of current whereas in the DC transmission system skin effect is not present due to the uniform distribution of current.
05. Need OF Insulation – In the AC transmission system, the insulation requirement is more whereas in the DC transmission system insulation requirement is less.
06. Interference – In the case of direct current line interference of communication lines is less whereas in the case of AC transmission system interference of communication lines is more.
07. Corona Loss – In the case of the DC transmission system corona effect does not occur whereas in the alternating current line corona effect occurs which reduces the efficiency of the system.
08. Cost – The cost of the erection of AC transmission lines is more compared to the cost of the direct current line because DC transmission requires only two conductors to transmit electricity whereas the alternating current line requires three conductors to transmit electricity.
09. Maintenance and Repairing – The maintenance of the alternating current line is inexpensive whereas the maintenance of the DC transmission system is expensive. The repairing of faults is easy in the AC transmission system whereas the repairing of faults in the direct current line is difficult.
10. Transformer – In direct current lines, transformers are not required whereas in an AC transmission system transformers are required.
11. Rectifiers and Inverters – In the alternating current lines, rectifiers are not required whereas in the DC transmission systems rectifiers and inverters are required.
Conclusion – According to my AC transmission system is good because it does not require any inverters and rectifiers and the voltage can be easily stepped up or stepped down.
