Analog And Digital Integrated Circuits
What is an IC?
An integrated circuit (IC) is a miniaturized circuit that contains transistors, diode, resistors, capacitor (active and passive components) and interconnection conductors on a small silicon semiconductor called a chip. The chip is enclosed in protective plastic or ceramic package from which pins extend for connecting the IC to other devices.
Integrated Circuits (IC) packages are classified according to the way they are mounted on a printed circuit (PC) boards as either through:
01. Hole mounted
02. Surface mounted
The through-hole type packages have pins (leads) that are inserted through holes in the printed circuit board and can be soldered to conductors on the opposite side. The most common type of through-hole package is a dual inline package.
It consists of two parallel rows of pins. The pins are numbered anticlockwise when viewed from the top of the package with respect to identifying the notch or mark at end of the chip. Pin numbering for standard types of IC packages is shown below.
Analog And Digital Integrated Circuits
Analog integrated circuits work on continuous varying (with respect to time) signals. For analog integrated circuits, external components are required. They are used to construct electronic circuits such as amplifiers, voltage comparators, etc.
Digital circuits are non-linear because they work on binary or discontinuous signals. The input and output voltages of digital circuits have two possible values (binary high or low) there are no intermediate levels.
Digital integrated circuits are complete functioning blocks as no additional external components are required for their operation. The output can be obtained by applying input and is logic 0 or 1.
