Slip Ring And Squirrel Cage Rotor
The basic difference is:
- 01. Rotor
- 02. Resistance
- 03. Maintenance
- 04. Industry Application
- 05. Rotor Resistance Starter
- 06. Speed Control
- 07. Uses
- 08. Construction
- 09. Slip Ring & Brush
- 10. Cost
- 11. Starting Torque
- 12. Wounding of Rotor
- 13. Rotor Copper Losses
The squirrel cage rotor is cylindrical in shape and slotted on its periphery. The cage rotor consists of copper or aluminum bars that are uninsulated called rotor conductors, in slots bars are placed. These bars are shorted with the help of end rings. The slip ring rotor construction of the rotor windings is exactly equal to the stator. The slip ring rotor construction is laminated and slotted and the slots contain the rotor winding.
Now I will explain in detail the above things.
01. Rotor – In the case of a slip ring, the rotor consists of three-phase winding which is similar to the stator winding whereas, in the case of a squirrel cage, end rings are used to short the bars at the end of which the rotor consists.
02. Resistance- In the slip ring rotor, resistance can be added externally whereas, in the squirrel cage, bars are shorted permanently so external resistance cannot be added.
03. Maintenance- The construction of the slip ring rotor is delicate and due to the brush frequent maintenance is required whereas in the squirrel cage rotor the construction is robust and maintenance is free.
04. Industrial Application- Only 5% of slip ring rotor type motors are used in the industry whereas 95% of squirrel cage rotor type motors are used in the industry.
05. Rotor Resistance Starter- In the case of a slip ring rotor, a rotor resistance starter can be used whereas, in the case of a squirrel cage rotor, a rotor resistance starter cannot be used.
06. Speed Control- Speed control by rotor resistance is possible in a slip ring rotor whereas speed control by rotor resistance is not possible in the case of a squirrel cage rotor.
07. Uses – The slip rings rotor type motor is used in lifts, hoists, cranes, elevators, compressors, etc whereas the squirrel cage rotor type motor is used in water pumps, lathes, fans, blowers, grinders, printing machines, drilling machines, etc.
08. Construction- The construction of a slip ring type rotor is complicated whereas the construction of the squirrel cage type rotor is very simple.
09. Slip Ring & Brush- In the slip ring rotor, the slip ring and brush are present to add external resistance whereas, in the cage rotor, brushes and slip rings are absent.
10. Cost- The rotor cost is more in the slip ring type whereas, in the cage type due to simple construction, the cost is less.
11. Starting Torque- In-ring type rotor, high starting torque can be obtained whereas in the cage rotor moderate starting torque cannot be controlled.
12. Wounding Of Rotor- The rotor must be wound for the same number of poles as in stator, in slip ring type whereas in cage type, the rotor automatically gets adjusts itself for the same number of poles as that of the stator.
13. Rotor Copper Loss- In the case of a slip ring, efficiency is less due to high rotor copper loss whereas, in the case of a cage rotor, the efficiency is high due to low rotor copper loss.
