Power Electronics Applications In Different Fields
The Power Electronics Applications began in 1956 with the invention of SCR by BELL Laboratories. Today, a vast number of power components available with high current and high voltage ratings in the market. The efficiency and control are improved for any power semiconductor device using it with a microprocessor & microcontroller.
Power electronics applications are from a few watts (for microcontrollers) to thousands of megawatts (HVDC Systems). Some of the major applications are as follows:-
01. Industrial Applications:- High voltage power generators, rolling mills, textile mills, excavators, welding, industrial lasers, blowers, compressors, pumps, Induction heating, and Industrial lasers.
02. Residential Applications:- Refrigeration and freezers, electronics equipment (television & computers), air conditioning, lights, dryers, fans, vacuum cleaners, light dimmer, food mixers, and washing machines.
03. Commercial Applications:- Computers and office equipment, UPS(Uninterruptible power supplies), Central Refrigeration, heating, elevators, light dimmer, and flasher.
04. Utility Systems:- High-voltage dc transmission(HVDC), static var compensation(SVC), supplemental energy sources, energy storage systems.
05. Transportation:- Traction control of electric vehicles, battery chargers for electric vehicles, electric locomotives, streetcars, trolleybuses, subways, Automotive Electronics, and controls.
Let’s understand the working of some applications:-
01. Electric vehicle and drive system
Fig shows an Electric vehicle power system, Electric Chargers are used to charge the Dc charge storing capacitors. The batteries used in the vehicle are those capacitors that have the capability of charging quickly.
The batteries supply power to variable-speed ac motors to propel the machine. The speed is controlled by an ac motor by changing the frequency of the Inverter. The dc-dc converter is used to provide the power supply to low-power electronics and microcontroller circuitry. All these inverters and converters used are power electronic devices.
02. Laptop/computer system Power Supply (SMPS):-
The complete power system is used to power various computer parts efficiently. The various dc-dc converters change the battery voltage into the voltage required by various computer hardware.
The Inverter produces high voltage & high frequency to drive the lamps to light the display. The boost converter is used to increase the magnitude of voltage required by the disk drive. The converter switching frequencies are typically very high. Power management is used to control the sleep modes in which power consumption is reduced and battery life is extended.
The commercial application requires power electronics including an off-line power system for computers, office and laboratory equipment, and uninterruptible ac power supplies.
This was about various applications of power electronics. I hope this article may help you all a lot. Thank you for reading.
