Roadmap To Become A Power Electronics Engineer
The main motivation to become a power electronics engineer is that demand for a power converter is increasing day by day because nowadays, power converters are used in every electronics device, in electric vehicles, in power grids or stations, etc. The energy generated in power plants is ac but we need dc supply for electronics device like smartphones, laptops, UPS, LED TV, etc. So, here power electronics engineer is responsible to design a suitable circuit.
If you are really interested or passionate to design power converters then you must read this article completely and it will guide you to become a power electronics engineer.
Topics I cover
- Desirable skills
- Which branch students can become a power electronics engineer
- Responsibilities
- How to start a career
- How to develop a skills
- Projects on power electronics
- Job Roles Offered
- Companies hiring power electronics engineer
As per the survey, there will three times more job opportunities in the future in the power electronics field compared to now. Jobs opening will be more in the electric vehicle industry.
01. Desirable Skills
The power electronics engineer must have desirable skills such as proper communication skills to understand the client’s needs, problem-solving ability or troubleshooting ability, ability to learn quickly, positive attitude, etc.
02. Which Branch Students Can Become A Power Electronics Engineer
Students from electrical & electronics and electronics & communication background can become a power electronics engineer because their background in electronics will be strong and they will learn subjects such as analog electronics, basic electrical, digital electronics, switched-mode power supply, and power electronics subjects in their domain.
03. Responsibilities
They are responsible to design power converters based on the customer’s specification, the circuit design can be of inverters, converters, choppers, buck-boost converter, cyclo-converter, etc. Inverters or rectifiers will convert ac supply into dc supply, converters will convert dc supply into ac supply, choppers means dc-dc converter and it has two types one is step-up chopper (step-up the voltage) and another one is step-down chopper (step-down the voltage), the buck-boost converter is also a dc-dc converter that will step-up or step-down the dc supply, cyclo-converter is a converter that will change the frequency from fixed to variable.
Well, the responsibility of the PE engineer is to design different power converters based on demand and the specifications given by customers.
04. How To Start A Career
First, you need to choose the electrical & electronics or electronics & communication engineering branch. After selecting, then learn subjects properly such as circuit analysis, basic electrical, analog electronics, digital electronics, power electronics, etc you need to be strong in these subjects if you want to go in this domain. Make some projects related to power electronics so that they will help you in the future.
05. How To Develop Skills
Before going into the industry try to develop skills. You must have good hands-on experience in tools such as MATLAB Simulink, proteus, EasyEDA, LTspice, etc. You can also do online courses from Udemy or Coursera to improve your skills. And also attend webinars conducted by IEEE or any other organization.
06. Projects Related To Power Electronics
The projects that you can do to develop skills are:
- Cuk Convert
- Bi-directional dc-dc converter
- Buck-boost converter
- Speed control of BLDC motor using a PI controller
- Regenerative braking for electric vehicles
- Three-phase controlled rectifier
- Multi-level inverter
- High efficiency ac-ac converter
07. Job Roles Offered
