Skills Required For Power Electronics Engineer

Research reveals that by 2030, 80% of all electrical energy would be generated by power electronics. This growth trajectory will bring professional advantages for technical engineers who possess an in-depth understanding of the fundamental principles and technical requirements of modern power conversion systems.

Power Electronics is present in a diverse set of fields such as:

  1. Mathematical Simulation For Electrical systems
  2. Electrical Machines
  3. Power Systems
  4. Control Systems
  5. Digital systems
  6. Analog Circuit Design
  7. Electronic devices
  8. Magnetics

Every electronic field requires power conversion for its operation, so it is very much necessary and required in every sector. Considering the growth of power electronics it can be predicted that demand for Power Electronics engineers is going to increase with time.

Some Major Skills & Knowledge required for Power Electronics Engineer:-

  • Basic Electronics
  • Electromagnetics
  • Analog Circuits
  • Circuit Theory
  • Control Systems
  • Digital Signal Processing
  • Power
  • Electrical
  • Physics

Engineering students or Professionals desiring to pursue a career in the field of power electronics need to acquire deep knowledge on the following subjects described above.

Practical implementation and testing is also a very important part of any product development before that there are various tools, Power Electronics students need to familiarize themselves with.

01. LTspice

This software was acquired by Analog devices and it is freeware.  It is a wonderful software for analog electronics simulations and electrical circuits. This software helps in analyzing the circuit working with transient states and steady states.

02. MATLAB

Matlab is developed by Mathworks, It is a very useful programming tool to design the control system for any power electronic application. The simulation and plots help to analyze the system.

03. Simulink

It is a graphical modeling tool from math work used in analyzing and simulating a multidomain dynamical system. Power Electronics required to learn this tool because it helps to develop the digital control for power electronics. Many engineers use this tool for mathematical modeling for machines.

Power Electronics engineer is required to have strong practical skills:-

01. Electrical CAD and drawing: The engineer should be able to draw and develop the schematics and electrical system drawings on the software.

02. Programming and Testing: The designer must be capable of programming controllers and PLC for their Industrial Application.

03. Assembling and Soldering: Industries require the engineer to test various circuits and repair them in production and manufacturing units.

04. Commissioning and servicing: Engineers need to test each electrical system before implementation and required to provide service if something breaks down.

The need is going to increase with time for PE Engineers, So, it is mandatory to have all the necessary skills required for this domain. I hope this article may help you all a lot. Thank you for reading.
