Hello Guys, welcome back to my blog. In this article, I will discuss what happens if a neutral wire fails or disconnect from mains.

Neutral Wire Fails
Now I will share one small incident which was happened to me while I was staying in a hostel. At afternoon 2:00 PM suddenly lights in my room started glowing very bright and the choke in the tube started burning, the fan stop rotating, and the three-pin socket was also not working properly. Then I took a tester and inserted tester in the socket and I was shocked that at both the pin it was showing phase. Then after some research, I came to know that neutral wire was failed.
Then after getting to know, I started searching where the neutral wire has disconnected. First, I opened the switchboard everything was fine then I went to the mainboard there also everything was fine and later I went to see service mains there I came to know that neutral wire was disconnected due to corrosion formation. After that, I called an electrician for repair and the problem was solved.
What Happens If Neutral Wire Fails Or Disconnected
If a neutral wire gets disconnected, then the appliances will not work, the fan may get burn, choke in the tube may burn, and current starts flowing through the neutral wire. If you insert the tester in the neutral point (socket) then it will indicate like a phase. This is for a single phase.
For three phases of supply, if the neutral wire fails nothing will happen because for three-phase load 440 volts like motors, and higher loads, the neutral wire is not required. The neutral wire is most required in a single phase. The current flows through the live wire and then it is supplied to loads like fans, lights, or any single-phase load, and then the current requires a return bath to go back to mains.
Whereas in three phases, the neutral wire is not necessary as a single phase. If the load is a balance in three phases then neutral carries zero current so there is no need of neutral, its ok to disconnect neutral in three phases but not in a single phase.
Why Appliances Get Burn?
The appliances get burn because it will get phase at both sides. If the neutral wire is failed and you turn on the light then the light gets 440 volts instead of 230 volts due to high voltage and no return path the choke gets to burn the same things happens with the fan also.
How To Avoid?
To avoid neutral wire failure you must follow some steps:
- 01. Do regular maintenance- Monthly once call to an electrician for maintenance.
- 02. Use good quality of wires: Use good company wires which will help you a lot.
- 03. Load- Don’t increase the load beyond the wire capacity.
I hope this article may help you all a lot……
