What Is Control System
Control is nothing but to regulate, to direct, or to command. Hence the meaning of a control system is that regulates, directs, or commends itself or some other system using an arrangement of different physical systems. Control system is the mind of industry and its automation. It can be physical, ecological, biological, etc. Now we try to understand the control system in depth using some simple examples.
- Assume one lamp has supply and one switch for regulating ON & OFF command. For a lamp, the entire system can be called a con-trol system.
- When a child flies the kite, he tries to con-trol it with the help of string and the entire system can be considered as a con-trol system.
Function of control systems is,
• To reduce the error between actual and desired output.
• To reduce the time response to load changes in the system.
Control system is classified in to two categories.
An open-loop system is a control system in which the con-trol action is not dependent on the output. For example, traffic signal, toaster, manual iron, etc. In this examples control action is not depend on any feedback of output.
A closed-loop system is a control sys-tem in which the control action is dependent on the output. Automatic iron, energy-saving air conditioner, domestic refrigerator, etc. In these examples, control action is dependent on the feedback of output.
Now let’s understand what is the feedback of output?
Consider an iron box. In this box, the first system is open-loop type means the system is not controlled. It can perform only manual commend like if we turn ON it will ON and when we turn OFF it will go to OFF condition. Now if the temperature exceeds during on condition it will burn the clothes. This problem is overcome by using a closed-loop system means the system is controlled. It can perform automatically like if the temperature exceeds temperature the sensor senses it and give a feedback command to the controller and it will automatically be turned OFF. On another hand when the temperature will decrease it will be automatically turn ON the supply.
Application Of Control System
Con-trol systems can be found in almost everything that moves. All living things have different types of control loops regulating body functions (temperature, blood cell production, hormone production…) Additionally, all technology, engineering, and science areas use con-trol systems to improve their performance.
Con-trol systems are totally used in SCADA and industrial automation. Nowadays control system is widely using in everywhere, like every domestic appliance, different industries, military, Morden vehicles, robotics, etc.
