What Is Smart Grid
A smart grid is a modern technology for self-solving faults with accurate solutions. A smart grid consists of both hardware and software components. Hardware components collect the power from various resources like Wind, Solar, Tidal, etc., generating sources. Software components are used to establish the different digital communications with the appliances. It is also popularly known as heavy IoT technology.
The smart grid is derived from the power grid as the integrated source, but with minor changes such as fault – detection and the communication software. Smart grids can detect faults and minimize them without human involvement by providing accurate solutions and protection. The smart_grid is a developing technology in the modern era.
Working On Smart Grid
Smart grid is developed using different technologies, so a wide range of technologies need various components. Components make work easy. Now let us see the components used in the smart_grid.
01. Sensors Controlled Appliances
The appliances used in the smart grid are used to manage the loads and energy conservation. These appliances are capable of decreasing the usage of electricity according to the consumer requirement which will decrease the energy cost charges to the customer. The sensors will limit the excess power and will provide power according to the required time of usage.
02. Smart Power Meters
These power meters are different from the normal power meters, these meters will generate the automatic power bills at the generation end and at the consumer end. These meters will detect the repairs and will send the notification to the repair crews and the failure will be made easily.
03. Smart Substation
Operations are all performed according to the digital communications given by the grid. Power factor performance, breakers, transformer status, and other operations will be done by this substation. The initial cost is very high because of the high technology and smart equipment.
04. Super Conducting Cables
The cables used will be very high insulated because the power should be directly received from the generating stations. These superconducting cables had a special quality of detecting faults and analyzing them with the tools. They will be insulated according to the weather and environmental conditions.
05. Integrated Circuits & Communications
All connections are gathered together to form an integrated circuit and then communication becomes very simple. There are various technologies used to communicate such as PLC (Programmable Logic Control) and SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition). The technologies are used according to the need. These communications will make the process easy and human involvement will be decreased.
The above-mentioned are the components of the smart_grid. These all perform their respective operations which make the smart_grid work. This is how the smart_grid works.
Benefits Of Smart Grid
- 01. The energy management data will be collected in the business and customer care using smart grid technology.
- 02. Smart charging of the appliances will be done by the smart grid.
- 03. Smart_grid is used to distribute the power to various sectors with high efficiency with the help of different technologies.
- 04. The usage of electricity will be made simple by decreasing the wastage of electricity with the help of the smart_grid.
- 05. The demand will be managed and the maintenance will be made easy with the help of smart_grid in domestic and industrial sectors.
Applications Of Smart Grid
- Used in power stations such as thermal power plants, hydropower plants, nuclear power plants, and solar power plants.
- Also used in substations like 121KV/11KV substation.
- In power grids.
- In Industries such as cement industry, petrol industry, etc.
Requirement Or Need For Smart Grid
A smart grid leads to many benefits. It is cost-effective and it will lead to saving energy. Smart_grid is popularly meant for renewable energy sources. The energy will be stored and distributed according to the requirement of various areas. The need for non-renewable generations such as thermal, and nuclear will be decreased and the use of renewable energy sources will be increased.
The initial cost may be high but the running cost will be very less and the installation of a smart grid will make every end satisfied. Hybrid electric vehicles are the main considerations for smart_grid design. The management of the power at the consumer end and the distribution end will be very effective and the power distribution will be highly efficient without any faults and losses. This smart_grid makes life easier and more effective. This is the major thing for why we require the smart_grid.
