Why We Use Overhead System Instead Of Underground System
Nowadays, each and every place an overhead system preferred. Well, it may be low tension lines, high tension lines, or transmission lines, for each and every stage overhead system is chosen. Since from the past years, we are using an OHS. The overhead system can be installed in a short time. Before coming to point let’s understand what is the OHS and a UGS.
What Is Overhead System?
The overhead system means the conductors are drawn from one point to another point above the ground level. Just go and look at the distribution lines near your home and see how the conductors are placed. Within a short period, the OHS can be installed by using some structure at particular points. In the overhead system, most of the insulation is provided by air so the system requires less insulation. The overhead system is cheaper because the cost of insulation is less and the conductor cost is also less. Well, there are also some drawbacks to a system such as it can be affected by lightning, short circuits, etc.
What Is Underground System?
The underground system means the conductors are drawn from one point to another point below the ground level. This system is mostly used in urban areas where the OHS is not possible. The UGS is costlier then overhead because the ground system is excavated. Installing an underground system is difficult while passing through obstruction such as hills, rivers, etc As the underground system is installed below ground level then the cost of insulation required is more.
Why Overhead System Is Mostly Used?
Well, as I said to you that the installation of an overhead system is cheaper than that of an underground system. And the overhead system can be erected within a short period. Whereas to install the underground system it takes more time for installation and the cost of insulation, conductor, and labor is very high. Thus, this is the reason why we prefer the overhead system.
Difference Between Overhead And Underground System
In the overhead system, there is a chance of interruption due to lightning, storms, or other conditions whereas in the underground system, there is no chance of interruption due to lightning, storms. In an overhead system, the conductor is less expensive whereas, in the underground system, the conductor cost is more.
The overhead system requires regular maintenance whereas underground system maintenance is less. The fault location in the overhead system is easy whereas it is difficult in the underground system. The repair can be done easily in the overhead system whereas it is difficult in the underground system.
Advantage And Disadvantage Of Overhead System
The main advantage of the overhead system is the low cost as we all know. The drawback of an overhead system is more maintenance, affected by conditions like storms, rain, etc.
