What is solenoid coil and why it is used in vehicle or car?

The solenoid coil works on the principle of electromagnetism. It consist of plung or rod which moves forward and background when the supply is given to the coil. When the supply is given to the coil, the plung moves forward and when supply is removed it moves backward.
