What is the necessity of starter?

At the beginning or starting, the motor speed is zero so that in armature the back emf is zero and because of that the armature resistance will be low. suppose the motor is directly connected with the supply, the motor will draw a heavy current by which the motor gets damaged. So, to avoid this starter is used at starting to limit high current. The starting current will be 5 to 7 times the rated current.
