Power System Interview Questions

01. What are the main components of a Power System?

A. Power System is mainly classified into four types and each one of them is sub-classified. The four components are:

  1. Generation
  2. Transmission
    a. Primary Transmission
    b. Secondary Transmission
  3. Distribution
    a. Primary Distribution
    b. Secondary Distribution
  4. Protection

02. How many types of cooling systems are there in the transformer?

A. There are four types of cooling systems in transformers:

  1. Oil natural, Air natural cooling system (ONAN)
  2. Oil natural, Air forced cooling system (ONAF)
  3. Oil forced, Air Forced cooling system (OFAF)
  4. Oil natural, Water forced cooling system (ONWF)

03. What are the types of energy sources and what is the major difference between them?

A. In power systems there are two types of energy sources Renewable and Non- Renewable energy sources. The major difference between them is renewable energy sources are infinite and Non-renewable energy sources are finite. The only similarity is this both are available on Earth.

04. What type of cooling is provided for generators in power plants?

A. Hydrogen gas cooling is employed for large-size generators because of the better heat-carrying ability of the hydrogen. Hydrogen cooling is provided for the rotor and core of the generator. Water cooling is provided for the stator of the generator in the power plant. These types of cooling systems are much more reliable that’s why this is mostly used for cooling generators in power plants.

05. What are the types of Renewable energy power plants?

A. There are majorly 6 types of renewable energy power plants

  1. Solar power plant
  2. Wind energy power plant
  3. Ocean energy power plant
  4. Geothermal energy power plant
  5. Hydro energy power plant
  6. Bio-organic energy power plant

06. What are the major Commercial power plants?

A. These are the major commercial power plants,

a. Hydro energy power plant
b. Thermal power plant
c. Nuclear power plant

07. Explain the operation carried out in the thermal power plants?

A. The water is obtained in the boiler and coal is burnt so that the steam generated by the boiler will be used for driving the turbine, This will generate mechanical energy by using the high-rated generators the mechanical energy is converted into electrical energy. This is how electrical energy is generated.

08. What are the nuclear elements used in the Nuclear power plant?

A. The nuclear elements involved in the fission process in the moderator are highly capable of undergoing fission. The elements which undergo are some the Isotopes such as Uranium – 233, Uranium – 235, and Plutonium – 239.

09. What are the advantages of an overhead transmission system?

A. The advantages of an overhead transmission system are:

  • Fault location is simple
  • Maintenance is very less and damage-free
  • Extension of transmission is possible
  • The replacement of components is very easy

10. What are the types of Underground Cables used in transmission?

A. The types of underground cables used are:

  • Low-tension cables (LT)
  • High-tension cables (HT)
  • Super – Tension cables (ST)
  • Extra-High – tension cables (EHT)
  • Extra super voltage cables (ESV)

11. What is the use of cross arms and mention its types?

A. Crossarms are used to provide to hold the insulators with certain gaps to avoid conductor interferences. There are many types of cross arms but majorly used are V- Crossarm, Zigzag-cross arm, U- cross arm, and line cross arm.

12. What are the main components of the Distribution system?

A. These are the main components of the distribution system,

  • Substation
  • Distribution feeder circuits
  • Switches
  • Distribution transformers
  • Primary circuits and services

13. What is a Distribution system and what are the types of distribution systems?

A. The process of distribution of the transmitted current from the power plant to the consumer load is known as the Distribution system. There are mainly three types of distribution systems:

  • Radial Distribution system
  • Ring Distribution system
  • Parallel Distribution system

14. What is a Service line?

A. The line which comes from the distribution system to the consumer’s meter is called a Service line. The Service line ends when the conductor inside the line connects to the meter. The service line supplies the current to the consumer from the distribution end.

15. What are the types of wire distribution systems?

A. There are mainly six types of wirings used in the distribution system

  • Single-phase – 2 wire system
  • Single-phase – 3 wire system
  • Two-phase – 3 wire system
  • Two-phase – 4 wire system
  • Three-phase – 3 wire system
  • Three-phase – 4 wire system

16. What is Transposition?

A. Arrangement of the transmission lines in periodic swap positions in order to prevent the communication Interface is known as Transposition. The main reason behind transposition is to prevent Telecommunication disturbances.

17. What is Power System Protection?

A. The process of identification of faults and disconnecting the fault apparatus and protecting the electrical power system from damage is called as Power System Protection.

18. What are the major components of protection?

A. These are the major components of protection,

  • Relays
  • Current transformer
  • Potential transformer
  • Circuit breaker
  • Tripping circuits and other auxiliary protecting elements

19. What are Relays In protection?

A. The switches which work electromechanically to open or close the circuit are called relays. It is mainly used for closing and opening switches to disconnect and connect the circuits.

20. What is the Economics of Power Generation?

A. The process of determining the per-unit cost of production of electrical energy is known as the economics of power generation.
