Types Of Power Electronic Converters

Power electronic converter is that which controls and converts the power by utilizing of power electronics whose range is high as compared to normal electronics.

Different types of power electronic converter:-

  • AC to DC conversion (Rectification)
  • DC to DC conversion
  • DC to AC conversion (Inversion)
  • AC to AC conversion

AC to DC conversion (Rectification):-

The AC to DC converters are converted by using of the POWER DIODE , IGBT (INSULATED GATE BIPOLAR TRANSISTOR) , SCR (SILICON CONTROLLED RECTIFIER) and the input of the converter equipment is ac and the output of the converter equipment is dc.

Based on Supply voltage type, Rectifiers can be classified as

  • Single phase Rectifiers.
  • Three phase Rectifiers.

Based on controllability, Rectifiers can be classified as

  • Uncontrolled Rectifiers (Diode rectifiers)
  • Fully controlled Rectifiers (SCR / other controllable switches-based rectifiers)
  • Semi Controlled or Half Controlled Rectifiers (Combination of diodes and SCRs)

Applications

  • Mobile Chargers
  • DC Drives
  • Front end rectifiers
  • UPS system
  • Battery Charging

DC to DC conversion:-

The DC to DC converters are converted by using of chopper the devices used for converting are POWER MOSFET,POWER BJT, SCR, IGBT Choppers are the switching converters which convert the unregulated dc input voltage into regulated controlled dc output at a desired voltage with the little power loss.

According to input /output voltage levels:

  • Buck converter :- output voltage is less than the input voltage
  • Boost converter :- output voltage is greater than the input voltage
  • Buck Boost converter :- output voltage is less than as well as greater than the input voltage

Applications:

  • Dc drives
  • SMPS
  • Battery driven vehicles
  • Led lightning
  • Induction heating

DC to AC conversion (INVERTER):-

The dc to ac is converted by using the inverters, the devices used for converting are IGBT,POWER MOSFET, SCR, GTOSCR, POWER BJT Inverter converts dc power into ac power at a desired output voltage and frequency.

According to type of source:

  • Voltage source inverter(vsi)
  • Current source inverter (csi)

According to circuit arrangement:

  • Bridge inverter (half and full bridge )
  • Parallel inverter
  • Series inverter

According to output voltage:

  • Single phase inverter
  • Three phase inverter

Applications:

  • Ac drives
  • Electric vehicles
  • Solar and wind energy systems
  • Ups systems
  • HVDC transmission

AC to AC conversion:-

The ac to ac converters are converted by using the cyclo-converter and ac voltage controller the devices used for converting are SCR, TRIAC.

Cyclo-converter: A device which converts input power at one frequency to output power at another frequency with one-stage conversion is called a cyclo-converter. A cycloconverter is thus a one-stage frequency changer.

Based on supply type cyclo-converters are of two types,

(i). Single phase cyclo-converters.
(ii). Three phase cyclo-converters.

Based on output frequency cyclo-converters are of two types,

(i). Step-down cyclo-converters (i.e., fo less than fs).
(ii). Step-up cyclo-converters (i.e., fo more than fs).

A cyclo-converter can be classified based on circuit configuration as follows,

(i). Mid-point cyclo-converters.
(ii). Bridge type cyclo-converters.

The applications of cyclo-converters are as follows,

(i). Speed control of high-power ac drives.
(ii). Static VAR Compensation.
(iii). Aircraft or shipboard applications.

Ac voltage controller:-

The AC voltage controller is a solid-state converter which converts a constant AC voltage into a variable AC voltage at constant frequency. This converter is also known as AC voltage regulators.

AC voltage controllers are popularly used in,

  • Lighting Control
  • Fan speed Control
  • Industrial Heating
  • Ac drives
  • Electric vehicles
  • Smart grids
