Dual-core And Quad-core Processors

A Processor refers to the logic circuitry. It responds to the basic instructions that drive a computer. It generally processes the basic instructions. Processors are basically the central processing unit. It is one of the main and most crucial integrated circuitry in a computer system. The main responsibility of the processor is for interpreting most computer commands. Processors perform the most basic logic, arithmetic, and input/output. The Central Processing Unit is not the only processor present in the computer. There is also a Graphics Processing Unit which is a most notable example. A Processor consists of some basic elements. The name of the basic components used in the Processors are as follows:

  • Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU)
  • Floating Point Unit (FPU)
  • Registers
  • L1 and L2 Cache Memory
  • Random Access Memory

On the basis of the number of cores, the processors are classified into two different processors namely Dual-core Processor and Quad-core processors.

Dual-Core Processor:

The Control Processing Unit has two distinct processors for working simultaneously in the same integrated circuit. The Dual-core processor can function the same as that of the single-core processor. It also performs the operations up to twice as soon as possible. The Dual-core chip of IBM has its Power 4 microprocessors in 2000. Dual-core CPUs were basically introduced in 2004. Due to the continual increase in single-core clock speeds, The Central processing units were generating more heat and using more power.

Dual cores were basically introduced to improve performance without generating more heat as dual-core systems use about the same amount of energy. The Central Processing Unit has also triple and quad cores have since been introduced. Due to the presence of a dual-core system. The system has twice the processing power of a machine with a single processor, this doesn’t mean it will always perform twice as fast. This is because some operating systems and programs are not optimized for multiprocessing.

Quad-Core Processor:

A quad-core processor is a kind of Central Processing Unit that has basically four cores present in the processor. It is a type of computer processor architecture that has four processor cores embedded within a single processor dye. All four cores of the central processing unit can execute and process instructions independently of the other cores. A quad-core processor is a multiprocessor architecture that is designed to provide faster processing power. It is basically a successor to the dual-core processor, which has two processor cores. Quad-core is a kind of processor that integrates two dual-core processors within a single processor.

The two separate dual cores of the Quad-Core processor communicate with each other using the processor cache. A quad-core processor can execute multiple instructions simultaneously, meaning that each core can be dedicated for separate instruction. The Quad-Core processors also increase the processing performance of a computer by a significant margin, system speed also depends on other computing components to deliver overall computing performance. The popular vendors of quad-core processor technologies are Intel and AMD processors.

The difference between Dual-Core and Quad-Core Processor are as follows:

01. Number of Processors: The Dual-Core Processor and the Quad-Core Processor can be differentiated on the basis of the number of processors present. A dual-core processor has a total of two processors on the other hand the quad-core processor has a total of four processors.

02. Speed: Dual-Core processor is not as fast as the Quad-Core Processor. But, the Quad-Core processor is considered to perform the operation quicker. The speed of any processor plays a vital role in the determination of the type of processor required for the particular work.

03. Energy: The dual-core processor consumes less power or energy as they have only two core processors. On the other hand, the Quad – Processor consumes more power or energy since they have a total of four core processors. The energy consumption of the processor also considered as one of the important factors while selecting the processor.

04. Task: The Dual-Core Processor can not perform many tasks simultaneously. On the other hand, the Quad-core processor can perform many tasks simultaneously. Quad-core processors are a lot more efficient than the Dual-core processor.

05. Heat: Dual-Core processors do not heat the gadget. On the other hand, the Quad-core processor causes a great deal of heat and hence heat the gadget.

06. Graphics: The dual-core processor lacks the presence of a good graphic. On the other hand, the Quad-core processors have high-quality and superior graphics.
