India’s ambitious Samudrayaan project, aimed at delving deep into the ocean and its resources, is all set to dispatch three personnel to a depth of 6,000 meters in a submersible vehicle.

This declaration was delivered by Union Minister of Earth Sciences, Kiren Rijiju, in a written response in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

The Samudrayaan project, India’s maiden manned ocean expedition, is meticulously devised to probe deep-sea resources and carry out biodiversity evaluations. The mission will not disrupt the ecosystem, as the submersible serves exclusively for exploration purposes.

This project is a constituent of the broader Deep Ocean Mission, which lends support to the center’s Blue Economy strategy. This strategy strives to sustainably harness ocean resources to bolster the nation’s economic expansion, enhance livelihoods, generate employment, and preserve ocean ecosystem vitality.

The Samudrayaan project’s materialization is anticipated by 2026 and is currently in the development phase under the aegis of the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) in Chennai. The submersible vehicle, christened ‘MATSYA 6000,’ boasts a 12-hour endurance in routine operations and a 96-hour capability in emergency situations for human safety.

This mission bears immense significance, as it empowers scientific personnel to directly investigate and comprehend uncharted deep-sea regions. It also aligns seamlessly with the Central government’s vision of ‘New India,’ wherein the Blue Economy stands out as one of the ten core growth dimensions.

The financial estimate for the Deep Ocean Mission, encompassing the Samudrayaan project, totals Rs. 4,077 crores, spanning a five-year duration, and will be rolled out in distinct stages.

With this endeavor, India may potentially become part of the select group of nations equipped with specialized technology and vehicles for subsea missions, joining the ranks of the United States, Russia, France, Japan, and China.
